FC Barcelona

  • Takefusa gave a trial at FC Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia In August 2011 and was invited after passing the trial. 
  • He began to play for Barca Alevin C (U11). 
  • He became the top goalscorer during his first full season 2012-13 with 74 goals in 40 games.  
  • He was then promoted to Barca Infantil A (U14) in his third full season. 
  • It was later found that Barcelona had violated FIFA's international transfer policy for U18 youths. He became ineligible to play for the club. 
  • Later he returned to Japan in March 2015. 

FC Tokyo

  • Kubo signed with FC Tokyo's junior youth team in 2016 and was promoted to the club's senior team in September 2016. 
  • He made his J League record debut at the age of 15 years, 5 months, and one day and became the youngest player to score in the J League in April 2017 scoring against Cerezo Osaka U23. He was 15 years, and 10 months old at the time. 
  • In May 2017, he made his debut for the first team in J League YBC Levain Cup after which
  • FC Tokyo announced in November 2017 that the team improved his contract with the club and will pay him as a first-team member. 
  • He became a regular starter for FC Tokyo from the start of the 2019 season.

Yokohama F. Marinos (loan)

  • Kubo joined Yokohama F. Marinos on a half-year loan on 16th August 2018 and scored in his Marinos debut against Vissel Kobe.

Real Madrid

  • Takefusa signed with Spanish club Real Madrid on a five-year deal on a free transfer on 14th June 2019. Although registered with their U-19 team, he had been expected to mainly play for Real Madrid B during the 2019-20 season. 
  • But, he featured regularly with the first team during Real Madrid's preseason tour of the United States and Germany.

Mallorca (loan)

  • Kubo joined RCD Mallorca on a season-long loan as he became the third Japanese player in Mallorca's history after Yoshito Okubo and Akihiro Ienaga on 22nd August 2019.
  • He made his debut for the club on 1st September 2019 in a 2-0 loss to Valencia as he became the youngest Japanese player in the Top 4 European leagues history to play in a match with a record of 18 years, 2 months, and 28 days. 
  • On 10th November 2019, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win against Villarreal. During his loan spell at RCD Mallorca, Kubo made 36 appearances for the club, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists in all the competitions. 

Villarreal (loan) 

  • He was loaned to Villarreal CF until the end of the 2020-2021 season where his loan was cut short on 8th January 2021.
  • He made 19 appearances for the club during his loan spell at Villarreal, scoring once and providing 3 assists in all the competitions. 

Getafe (loan)

  • On 8th January 2021, Kubo moved to fellow top-tier side Getafe CF on loan for the remainder of the 2020-2021 season where he made 18 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing 1 assist in all the competitions. 

Return to Mallorca (loan)

  • He rejoined RCD Mallorca on a season-long loan where he made 31 appearances for the club on 12th August 2021, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists in all the competitions. 

Real Sociedad

  • Takefusa joined Real Sociedad on a permanent deal for a transfer fee of €6 million on 19th July 2022.
  • He marked his debut by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win away to Cadiz in their opening game of the season in La Liga.

International Career


  • Takefusa Kubo represented Japan's national team at various age levels as well as he represented Japan at U16, U17, U20, U21, U23, and the senior level.
  • As well, he was selected for the Japan U20 national team for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup. He was 15 years old then. 
  • Shortly before turning eighteen, Kubo was named to the squad for the 2019 Copa America, which marked his first call-up to the senior squad. 
  • On 9th June 2019, he made his senior international team debut for Japan in a 2-0 friendly win against El Salvador.
