Harry James Souttar is a professional footballer who is professionally known as Harry Souttar. He is well recognized for playing as a defender for Premier League club Leicester City and the Australia national team. Harry's father, Jack Souttar was a footballer who played for the Scottish football club, Brechin City in the 1970s. His mother Heather Souttar is an Australian born in Port Hedland, Western Australia. He had five siblings; three older brothers named John, Harry, and Aaron, and two sisters, Ailsa and Mhiran. John is also a professional footballer and plays for Rangers, as well as representing Scotland. Unfortunately, his brother Aaron died of motor neurone disease at the age of 42 which left the family, from Luthermuir, near Aberdeen in Scotland, broken-hearted.

Harry Souttar Football Career

Harry Souttar started playing football by joining the Brechin City Boys Club in the late 2000s after which he was attached to Celtic before joining the academy at Dundee United in July 2013.

Dundee United 

  • Harry played for the Dundee United development team in February 2015, alongside his brother John
  • He then made his senior team debut against Partick Thistle in a Scottish Premiership match on 10th May 2016 and scored his first senior goal against Kilmarnock four days later.

Stoke City

  • Souttar was officially transferred to Stoke City on 29th September 2016 where he made his Stoke City debut on 23rd August 2017 against Rochdale. 
  • After signing a new contract with Stoke City, he joined Scottish Premiership side Ross County on 24th January 2018 until the end of the season. He played 13 times for the Staggies however, he was unable to help them avoid relegation to the Scottish Championship.
  • Later on 30th January 2019, hr joined EFL League One side Fleetwood Town on loan for the remainder of the 2018-2019 season and also played on loan for the 2019-2020 season.
  • He made his league debut for Stoke City on 26th September 2020 in a 1-0 win away to Preston North End and was named the man of the match.
  • In February 2021, he signed a new long-term contract with Stoke City and scored his first goal for Stoke City against Wycombe Wanderers on 6th March 2021.
  • Subsequently, he started the 2021-2022 season in good form having been part of a Stoke defense that had conceded 19 goals in 17 games with the Potters fifth in the Championship before he suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury whilst playing for Australia in November 2021.
  • He made his return a year later prior to the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and after returning to England following the World Cup Souttar attracted bids from Premier League clubs.

Leicester City

  • Harry Souttar joined Leicester City on a five-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee on 31st January 2013. The fee was reported by the BBC to be £15 million which could eventually rise to £20 million with add-ons.

International Career 

  • Harry Souttar was called to represent Scotland's under-17 team against Romania making his debut for the team in February 2015 and was called up to the Australia national under-23 soccer team on 6th March 2019. 
  • On 10th October 2019, he made his international debut for the Australian national team in a World Cup qualifier against Nepal and scored twice in a 5-0 win; the fourth goal was initially recorded as a Nepalese own goal, but eventually was awarded to Souttar by FIFA.

    Harry Souttar's mother took birth was born in Port Hedland, Western Australia which meant the Souttar brothers were eligible to represent either Australia or Scotland at the international level. Not that it took much convincing to get him to represent the country of his mother's birth. "The chat that I had with the manager, the assistant manager and obviously growing up with my mum being Australian, listening to stories, even my granny telling me stories, it was a natural decision," Souttar told Optus Sport.

      "It's not really that I picked Australia over Scotland, and I turned my back on Scotland, I've seen a lot of stuff in the papers like that, but it was not like that at all. It was just a natural thing for me to pick Australia, it was something I wanted to do for me and my family." Despite his thick Scottish accent, Harry actually has a real connection to Australia. Also, the defender is even planning a trip down under to see where his mother grew up.
